Long Island summers are gorgeous for pet ownership: long days, water access, off-leash trails, outdoor patios that welcome dogs. They're also peak season for heatstroke, tick-borne disease, July 4 runaways, and parasites you never see in winter. This is the checklist we run through with our own dogs every May.
Heat and humidity
Brachycephalic breeds (bulldogs, pugs, Frenchies, boxers) and senior dogs are at real risk above 80ยฐF. Watch for excessive panting, dark red gums, stumbling, vomiting โ all signs of heatstroke. Walk dogs at 6 AM or 8 PM in July and August. The pavement test: back of your hand on the concrete for seven seconds. If you can't hold it, neither can their paws.
Ticks โ Long Island is heavy
Lyme, anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, babesiosis โ Long Island has them all, and tick numbers have been climbing every year. By April you should already have your dog on year-round prevention. Top options: Bravecto (oral, every 12 weeks), NexGard (monthly), Simparica Trio (monthly, also covers heartworm). Check your dog after every yard, trail, or beach session โ pay attention to ears, between toes, armpits, groin, the base of the tail. Tick borne diseases can take weeks to show symptoms; the test is at the next yearly checkup.
Beach and pool safety
- Dogs don't all swim โ test in a controlled pool or kiddie pool before open water
- Salt water causes diarrhea (small amounts) or salt poisoning (large amounts) โ bring fresh water
- Rinse the salt and sand off after every beach trip โ hot spots form within 24 hours
- Pools: dogs can't always find the steps. Show them how to get out before they go in.
July 4: the worst day of the year for runaway dogs
More dogs go missing on July 4 than any other day. Long Island towns light off fireworks from late June through July 8. Prep:
- Microchip is registered and current. Most lost dogs get reunited via chip.
- Collar with phone number, even if your dog is normally chipped-only
- Last walk before sunset; bring them in before the first boom
- Calming aid if your dog spooks (Sileo Rx, Trazodone Rx, Adaptil collar over-the-counter)
- Close all windows and pull curtains โ sound dampening matters
- Never leave a fireworks-anxious dog alone in the yard on July 4. Ever.
Hamptons traffic and pet logistics
If you're driving east on a Friday in July, the LIE adds 2+ hours of stopped traffic. That's brutal in a hot car. Pre-trip: empty water, full tank of gas, sunshade in back windows, water and bowl easily reachable. Never leave a dog in a parked car โ even with windows cracked, internal temp can hit 120ยฐF in 30 minutes.
Fleas, mosquitoes, and heartworm
Long Island is a heartworm region. Year-round monthly prevention is the standard of care (interceptor, Heartgard, Sentinel, or a combination drug like Simparica Trio). Mosquito-heavy yards near water (lots of Suffolk) make this especially important. Fleas peak August through October but year-round prevention is simpler than seasonal.
